Smoking a turkey in the winter
Question: I have a 12 pound turkey and an electric smoker, one of those tall cylinder ones that I picked up for about 60 bucks at lowes last year.
I have read that I should smoke it for about 10-12 hours, and longer in cold weather. Well, here in kansas city, it's going to be in the low 30's w/ snow flurries. So I am unsure how long to smoke it for, originally I had planed on putting her in the smoker about 6am, and having it ready by 3pm, I am thinking I may need to let her smoke for up to 20 hours! I am starting to panic! And I can't find any other websites to compare with... Help!!!
Does anyone have any experience smoking turkeys in the winter cold?
Answer: Depends on what temp you use it should take 12 hours and more with the wind and electic. Check it with a meat thermomter. You could smoke it for 6 or more hours and finish it in the oven. We do this often doesn't take long to get the smoky favor. Good Luck!
Answer: Do you have a thermometer for the temperature of the smoker? Thats pretty important for long smokes. I get all my info over here, its more for charcoal but maybe you will find something.
